AI and Social media manipulation: the Good, the Bad, the Ugly

The Double-Edged Role of AI in Social Media

At the ISSNAF Annual Event 2024, Filippo Menczer, from the Observatory on Social Media, delivered a compelling lecture on the impact of artificial intelligence in social media. Menczer highlighted both the opportunities and risks posed by AI in the digital landscape.  AI is a powerful tool for promoting social good, such as detecting fake accounts and combating misinformation. It uses advanced learning techniques to uncover harmful patterns and support fact-checking efforts, fostering transparency and trust online.  However, these capabilities come with risks. Bad actors exploit AI to create convincing fake profiles and spread disinformation at scale. Even well-intentioned AI tools can mislead users if they make errors, undermining trust. Current detection methods struggle to keep up, leaving platforms vulnerable to abuse.  To harness AI responsibly, we need better detection systems, transparent oversight, and collaborative policies. Balancing AI’s potential with safeguards is crucial to building safer digital spaces.
