In this #ISSNAFStory, Professor Giorgio Einaudi reflects on founding ISSNAF in 2007 while serving as a Scientific Attaché at the Italian Embassy in Washington. The foundation addresses Italy’s brain drain by building a network of Italian researchers abroad, allowing them to contribute to Italy from overseas rather than returning home. Prof. Einaudi discusses the challenges of fostering long-term scientific collaborations and highlights his work with the Foresight Project, which aimed to shape research strategies in critical areas like health, energy, and the environment.  He also shares insights from his research on the sun and the importance of interdisciplinary efforts to solve global issues. Concerned about the slow progress in fusion energy research, Prof. Einaudi encourages young Italian researchers to seek opportunities where conditions are most favorable. He values the balance of working between Italy and the U.S., finding fulfillment in staying connected to both.
