2024 ISSNAF Young Investigator Mario Gerla Award

Advancements in Next-Generation Wireless Networks


Dr. Leonardo Bonati, Associate Research Scientist at Northeastern University's Institute for the Wireless Internet of Things, has been honored with the 2024 Young Investigator Mario Gerla Award.


Dr. Bonati received his Ph.D. in Computer Engineering from Northeastern University in 2022. His research focuses on pioneering software-driven solutions for Open RAN in next-generation cellular networks, emphasizing O-RAN management, network automation, and orchestration. He has actively contributed to the Technical Program Committees of numerous IEEE and ACM conferences and served as a guest editor for a special issue of Elsevier Computer Networks on Advances in Experimental Wireless Platforms and Systems.


Below is the jury's statement recognizing Dr. Bonati as this year’s awardee.

"Dr. Leonardo Bonati is awarded the Mario Gerla Award for his significant contributions to advancing wireless network technologies by addressing critical challenges in deploying and operating next-generation mobile networks, such as 5G and 6G.  By focusing on comprehensive solutions and utilizing cutting-edge techniques, like machine learning,  network orchestration, and automation, Dr.Bonati's research aims to create more efficient and reliable wireless networks that can support the growing connectivity needs of our world."
