INTERVIEW WITH THE GERLA FAMILY
During this interview conducted at the 2023 ISSNAF YI Awards ceremony, the Gerla family highlighted their contribution in honoring the legacy of Dr. Mario Gerla, a pioneer in computer networking, a UCLA professor, and a founding member of ISSNAF. The family established the Mario Gerla Award for Research in Computer Science in 2019 to commemorate his work and support emerging researchers in the field.
MOTIVATION BEHIND THE MARIO GERLA AWARD
The Gerla family explained that their motivation for creating the Mario Gerla Award is to support and invest in the new generation of researchers who share Dr. Mario Gerla's passion for computer science and innovation. They aim to continue inspiring early-career researchers, just as Dr. Gerla did during his tenure at UCLA and through his involvement with ISSNAF. This initiative not only honors Dr. Gerla's memory but also encourages the next generation of researchers to pursue innovative and impactful work in the field.
RECOGNITION OF 2023 MARIO GERLA AWARD RECIPIENT
The 2023 recipient of the Mario Gerla Award, Giulia Guidi, an assistant professor at Cornell University, was recognized for her significant contributions to high-performance computing. Her work involves developing algorithms and software infrastructures to handle large-scale computational problems, particularly in computational biology. In her acceptance speech, Guidi expressed gratitude to her mentors and collaborators and highlighted the importance of the award in furthering her research endeavors.
