Space and Innovation: Luca Parmitano Inspires the ISSNAF Community in Texas

ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano for "Stories of Space and Innovation", an inspiring event hosted by ISSNAF West South-Central Chapter & Comites of Houston at TMC Innovation on March 20th. Explore space, science, and innovation!

Luca Parmitano, the first Italian commander of the International Space Station (ISS) and veteran of two space missions (in 2013 and 2019), captivated the audience for nearly two hours with stories, photos, and videos from his remarkable journeys into orbit. His presentation was more than just awe-inspiring visuals of our planet viewed from space, it offered powerful insights into Earth's fragility and emphasized the importance of space science and research.

During the event, moderated by Dr. Eleonora Dondossola (ISSNAF WSC) and Dr. Salvo Saieva (Comites) , Parmitano shared striking observations about climate change. Through compelling images captured during his missions, Luca vividly witnessed how devastating the effects of global warming are, even from the distant yet uniquely revealing perspective of space. Melting glaciers, deforestation, drought, wildfires: these phenomena are increasingly visible from orbit, highlighting the urgency for decisive global action.

Parmitano also described some of the groundbreaking scientific experiments conducted aboard the ISS, ranging from human physiology studies and fluid dynamics to space botany and advanced materials science. He highlighted how these experiments not only push the boundaries of science and technology but also yield valuable insights with practical applications on Earth. For instance, experiments in space agriculture have improved our understanding of plant growth under extreme conditions, potentially enhancing sustainable agriculture practices on Earth.

One of the most remarkable moments in Parmitano’s account was the recollection of his extraordinary extravehicular activities (EVAs), commonly known as spacewalks. Luca has conducted six spacewalks in his career, totaling 33 hours and 9 minutes. During Beyond, Luca supported more than 50 European experiments and 200 international experiments in space, and he shared his groundbreaking role in repairing the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS). AMS is a sophisticated instrument aboard the ISS designed to study cosmic rays and dark matter, playing a fundamental role in helping scientists unravel some of the universe's greatest mysteries. Although initially designed as an experiment that would never require orbital maintenance, AMS experienced a critical malfunction. Parmitano successfully led an unprecedented repair mission, performing complex maneuvers never attempted in space (including using a simple wrench) to restore AMS’s full scientific capabilities, ensuring the continuation of vital cosmic research.

Parmitano concluded his presentation with a powerful message directed especially to the young researchers and students in the audience, emphasizing the importance of personal commitment in protecting our planet. He stressed that “everyone must strive to give their very best,” adding, with simplicity and clarity, that “it makes no difference whether you're an astronaut or a pizza maker, what truly matters is your determination to put forth your best effort, whatever path you choose.”

At the conclusion of the event, the large audience, counting over 220 attendees, had the opportunity to interact with Parmitano, asking questions and sharing curiosities. The session was followed by an autograph signing and a group photo to capture the unique moment.

The event also included greetings by the member of the Italian Chamber of Deputies, Christian Di Sanzo and Italian Consul General Mauro Lorenzini, who both underscored the importance of initiatives like this to strengthen the I     talian and scientific communities in Houston.

We sincerely thank Luca Parmitano for his generosity, enlightening stories, and the inspiration he shared. A special thanks goes to everyone who participated and filled not only the room but also the heart of this unforgettable event with their thoughtful questions and contagious enthusiasm.

Pietro Milillo wrote this story with support from Eleonora Dondossola, Stefano Casarin, Martina Sgritta and Federica Giordano.
